Levi's® Explores “A Golden State Of Mind"

Levi's® Explores “A Golden State Of Mind" For Fall 2014

For the Fall 2014 collection, Levi's® continues to explore its roots: namely, it's iconic home state of California. From the sun-soaked urban landscape of SoCal's Venice Beach to the awe-inspiring natural beauty of Yosemite Valley, the design team taps into the very essence of the Golden State.

"California embodies so many aspirational things—from skateboarding and climbing, to beaches and surfing, and now tech start-ups and innovation," says Jonathan Cheung, Head of Levi’s® Global Design. "It's a remarkable part of the world and something that permeates all aspects of our new collection."

Inspired by trips up and down the coast, in addition to non-residents' idea of what California stands for, the design team looks at themes such as '90s grunge, West Coast prep and counter-culture sports (skateboarding, surfing) for the first half of the collection, and translating the richness of Yosemite's rugged landscape into more dressed-up clothing in the second half.

This all manifests itself in a dynamic mashup of distressed denim, tonal tie-dyes, varsity jackets, crisp white button-downs, water repellant corduroy, tees illustrated by iconic artist Rick Griffin, geo patterns, fair isle sweaters, chalky finishes, high-performance outerwear and much more, all built to be worn while living life's greatest adventures in Levi’s®.

  1. Key fits for the season

For Fall 2014, the brand continues to evolve its most popular men's denim and non-denim fits. The season sees the introduction of Levi’s® 522Ô Tapered jeans, sitting slightly higher on the waist and with a slim tapered fit, this trend-forward style looks great with a bare ankle for a fashion-forward look. The Levi’s® 510Ô skinny jeans offer a quintessential rock and roll style and counter-culture favorite, while the Levi’s® 511Ô slim cut is fast becoming the new normal for the men today.
  2. The Icons

Levi's® most iconic garments—501® jeans, Western Shirt and Trucker Jacket—have also been reimagined this season. With '90s-era Venice Beach in mind, both the Levi’s® 501® and Trucker Jacket get the custom treatment for Fall 2014, featuring hand-crafted, super-distressed finishes and ripped and repaired exteriors, patched up with indigo swatches and panels of green military twill. This personalized, DIY attitude can also be found in a specialized version of the Trucker Jacket that comes in crisp blue denim, covered in California-themed patches.

For the Yosemite-inspired portion of the line, the Trucker Jacket is reborn in water repellant corduroy in a variety of rustic hues. The Trucker also comes in heather gray fleece, herringbone cord, and lined in sherpa, all for a wintery feel. Meanwhile, denim and chambray in a variety of washes continue to define the Western Shirt, with reinventions in rustic twill plaids, fleece, and chamois also paying homage to California.
  3. Water Repellant Cord

Levi's® celebrates its rich history in corduroy while pushing innovation forward with the debut of its Water Repellant Cord for Fall 2014. The tech-savvy material manifests itself in some of Levi's® greatest silhouettes—Levi’s® 511Ô slim cut jeans and the Sherpa Trucker Jacket, which features a fuzzy sherpa collar and interior for added warmth. Inspired by the colors found in Yosemite, the new Water Repellant Cord comes in a palette of golden brown, burned orange, deep blue and black, all ready to brave the elements.
  4. Made in Japan

Representing Levi's® focus on craftsmanship, the brand's Made in Japan collection will be introduced worldwide for the first time ever for Fall 2014, having previously been sold only in Japan. The line, which celebrates top-notch quality and expression through Japanese handcraftsmanship, was inspired by the beauty of indigo and the inky dark blue hues found in the lakes, mountains, wildlife and big skies of Yosemite.

This theme results in limited-edition versions of Levi's 501® and 513Ô jeans and Barstow Western Shirt in a variety of inventive renditions and rinses, featuring gorgeous high-contrast finishes, snow bleaching techniques, reinforced repair patches, and intricate boro (Japanese folk fabric) detailing. Okinawa-based tie-dye artist and visual colorist Yogu (Yuichiro Koguro) also creates an exclusive line of hand-printed t-shirts and wall hangings for the collection.
  5. Double Stitch

A riff on the design language of the iconic Levi’s® 501® jean with the volume turned up eight decibels, Levi's® debuts the Double Stitch line for Fall 2014. The capsule menswear collection features the exaggerated design element of doubling up pre-existing stitch patterns on specific 5-pocket styles (the Levi’s® 504Ô straight and Levi’s® 511Ô slim jeans), a Western Shirt reborn as a quilted jacket, a dark denim Trucker Jacket and a two-pocket Work Shirt.
  6. Rick Griffin

Levi's® collaboration with iconic illustrator Rick Griffin is a major cornerstone of the Fall 2014 collection. One of the leading psychedelic artists of the '60s, creating a series of instantly recognizable posters and album sleeves for The Grateful Dead, among a plethora of other projects, Griffin's lively illustrations feature in the Venice-inspired portion of line, showing up in both the men's and women's collections.

For the men's offerings, Griffin's work (specifically, seven different prints) appears on five tees and three sweaters, as well as a series of badges and iron-on patches. Meanwhile, the women's collection features six of Griffin's iconic prints and includes two t-shirts, one sweatshirt, two muscle tanks, an oversized vest and a pair of shorts. The featured artwork is a mix between tough and playful, from a sketch of an eyeball riding a wave to a cartoon car stacked high with surfboards to text-heavy poster-like prints in bright gradient hues.
  7. Fair Isle

Inspired by the rustic beauty of Yosemite Valley and the idea of dressing up the outdoors, rich and vibrant Fair Isle prints fill the second half of the Levi's® Fall 2014 collection. The standout, geometric prints grace classic crewneck sweaters and cowl-neck button-up cardigans, all ideal for wearing and giving during the holiday season.
  8. Footwear and Accessories

Reviving the Levi’s® brand’s roots in work footwear, men’s shoes step the grunge influence up a gear with a collection of leather lace-up American Style boots. Expanding the Commuter line of utilitarian accessories, Fall/Winter’14 also introduces a new range of roll top backpacks, messengers and an urban tech sling bag, designed for the man on the move.

  1. The Icons

The iconic Levi’s® 501® Jean, Trucker Jacket and Western Shirt also continue to evolve for the Fall 2014 Women's collection. Serving as a homage to a life lived in Levi's®, the design team have created classic 501® boyfriend-style jeans in varied levels of distress—at times completely trashed to indulge in the Venice Beach grunge theme, other times coming in a timeless palette of white, charcoal and authentic blues. Meanwhile, the much beloved Levi’s® 501® cut-off shorts go from white and lighter washes to super-dark denim and with some styles playing with a longer hem length.

Women’s Trucker Jackets span light to dark rinses, with Venice-inspired trucker vests and moto and a Yosemite-inspired elongated Sherpa, as well as saturated overdyes and decorative repair work. The collection also features a caramel-coloured suede Trucker, which comes with a matching pair of Levi’s® 501® cut off shorts.

Meanwhile, the season's Western Shirt comes in Venice Beach-inspired chalky pastels, lightweight chambray and heavier Yosemite-inspired flannel plaids. Adding to the classic shape is a new, flattering relaxed-fit silhouette, which is cut close up top and more relaxed at the waist, along with a fleece western shirt and denim shirt-dress.
  2. The White Shirt

Seen as the perfect companion to a pair of iconic 501® jeans, the women's design team takes a deep dive into the idea of the classic, borrowed-from-the-boys white shirt for Fall 2014. Four main interpretations (and five complementary designs) emerge, spanning from a cropped button-up style to a slouchier tunic shape. With a nod to crisp, West Coast prep, all versions can be layered over and under other garments or worn solo, and serve as a blank canvas for personal style. Combined with a contrasting lived-in jean, the back-to-basics white shirt is one the wearer can make completely her own.
  3. The Levi’s® Revel™ Collection

Fueled by a quest to create the "perfect jean," Levi's® debuted its patent-pending Revel™ design in July 2013. Built to enhance and manage a woman's curves, Levi’s® Revel™ continues to evolve for Fall 2014, coming in new colors inspired by the surf-meets-sidewalk culture of '90s-era Venice Beach and the rich natural shades of Yosemite. The leg-lengthening, tummy-flattening, body-contouring jeans are also softer than ever before.
  4. Footwear and Accessories

A celebration of lasting, quality craftsmanship, the women’s shoe range introduces subtly distressed modest heeled and flat leather ankle boots and laced brogues, creating a head-to-toe androgynous look perfect for navigating the city or the great outdoors.
